Saturday Feb 8, will be one for the record books for freshman newcomer Makinley Turner, as she threw the first perfect game of her young freshman career.
Turner, from Thorsby, AL., threw five innings of scoreless, no hit ball, with six strikeouts to add to her conference leading 19 strikeouts on the season. She faced 15 batters and sat all 15 batters down in order as the Lady Bison battled with Georgia Military College on Saturday afternoon winning 10-0 in 5 innings. "I am really shocked and was trying to pitch well and help my team" Turner said. Head Coach Chris Steiner stated "Makinley is a hard working, humble player who player and this is such a great experience for her. People don't realize how hard it is to win a game, let alone a perfect game. Really proud of her and the way the team played behind her".
Makinley Turner was not finished for the day, as she came in relief of Game Two, as Southern Union battled Heartland College. Turner picking up her second save opportunity, threw, 2 scoreless innings of relief duty adding 2 more Strikeouts to her total for the season. On the week, Turner threw 9 scoreless innings, and finished with 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks allowed in 3 games.
Turner helped her cause at plate as well going 1-3 with an RBI at the plate against GA Military and is hitting .444 on the season to help in both sides of the ball.
Turner said "I felt good, my ball was moving and my team played solid defense behind me. I could not of done this without my team and them working hard for me. It felt good for us to get a good win over a good team".
Southern Union is 7-2 on the season with Turner pacing the pitching staff this season with a 2-0 record with two complete games thrown, two saves, and 19 Strikeouts in 16 innings pitched and .438 era to start the season.
